What car to buy? £1500-£2000, fairly (not too) powerful, modifiable, got escort 1.8 in mind so far! Thoughts?

Basically i have about £1500-£2000 and i need a reasonably powerful car which i can modify (so fairly mainstream), im a bit of a speed freak and my rover 100 isn't satisfying me anymore. Nothing too powerful please because insurance might be a problem (im only 18)!

Currently looking at ford escorts 1.6/1.8 litre engines. Preferably a car with a long wheelbase (such as the escort) as im bored with being looked down upon as a little hatchback boy racer.

Ideally i would like a mondeo but my dad is unwilling to part with his, so perhaps something cheaper.

Any thoughts?

Thanks.

steer clear of the ford my friend
get your self in to somthing jap
i sugest a civic coupe you can get up to an n reg in a 1.5i which is very nippy and easy to mod or after n reg you can get the 1.6 v-tech which would be evan quicker.
I say get a Corsa !!
what about a focus??
escort all day
Dont Buy a Ford!!

Try looking at Peugeots 306`s they are fun
go to some car auctions.. i would go for focus, or bmw.
Well you could buy an old vectra they are quite cheap these days but a bit powerful, or get something from the sixtys and you dont have to pay road tax they can be cheap aswell.
You can never go wrong with a Honda Civic. The 1600 16V is pritty powerfull and very reliable and it is very modifiable.
BMW 325i on a G' reg or newer.straight 6 engine plenty of bang for your bucks.
I just sold a 1.8Injection Escort for £320, so think you can do better than that. You should have a look at the Ford Scorpio 2.9 Cosworth. Ugly as sin, but where an Escort carries a heavy loading on it because all the boy-racers buy them, the Scorpio Cossy has almost none as they were usually owned by Exectutive types that wanted a cheap alternative to a Jaguar or 530 BMW. Boy racers never bought tehm so the insurance is surprisingly cheap, perhaps a fraction more than a 1.8 Escort but will only be a fraction. I had one at 20, and it was great. Comfortable, powerful, fast and reliable.
