SMS checks are not that comprehensive. It is best to do it online at www.hpicheck.com. You can also call hpi on 01722 422 422. (£20).
To start, you need your credit card and the number plate details (aka vehicle registration mark or VRM) of the car you are looking at. This is a rough guide that will tell you if the car with that number plate is stolen or should have been scrapped.
To get a more comprehensive check (the car could have false plates) you also need to know:
- the car's VIN, which is stamped on a plate in the engine bay. This is a 17-digit code containing numbers and letters.
- the car's current mileage
- the car's current MOT certificate number, and
- the number and date on the car's registration document (aka V5 or logbook)
You should be able to get this info from the seller and when you view the car.
