Why does my 1998 vw polo 1.4 16v parking brake light flashes and a beeping sound?

hello you need to check the brake fluid level usually when the light stays on then it means its low. have your brakes started to get soft ? before you start to get worried check the fluid if its not it you may need to change the brake pads hopefully this is all the problem is if your worried bring it to a mechanic check the manual for the car first before paying someone to look at it hope i helped :-)
probley need new brake pads if its red its danger
If its only the parking brake light, i would suggest to look at the rear drum brake shoes for wear.
And if they look ok check the wear indicators for damage or even a break in the wires. good luck.
do the basics first
1. brake fluid
2. cheak pads and shoes
3.hand brake off
if non of this work or the linnings are ok then could be the hand brake switch it self ( under handbrake)
or abs has failed
