When a car stands for over a year without being started?

charge battery, check all fluids, add fresh fuel maybe some octane boost. Changing oil is not nessesary, oil viscosity breaks down with use. Not from sitting, when you pull your dip stick just make sure its not watery,(white film) if you have this change the oil. Don't be overly concerned with brakes, unless the E-brake (parking brake, manual transmission) has been on for the year, may be seized, hit the linkage with a little WD-40, when you try to move the car if they are siezed you may have to take the whell off and massage it with a hammer a little. If it's an automatic transmission, then the discs may be a bit rusty, but it will wear off quickly enough, make sure brake fluid resevoir is full. Check tire pressure and look for side wall deterioration, especially if the tires are low on air. A year isn't actually that long to be sitting, make sure to take it for a good run.
Charge the battery and renew the petrol/gas
Check the oil. Bounce it a bit to mix up the petrol as resins can separate out and gum up the works, get some fresh petrol as soon as you can. Check the brakes work.
DO NOT spray wd40 on the pads as someone suggested below, not only will you run into a wall, but it would contaminate the pads.
Change the oil.

Just change or recharge the battery to get it started. The brakes will be very rusty and not work too well, they'll make a funny sound at first but they should soon wear in. Other than that, nothing

Try making sure the battery hasn't gone flat, if the car has an alarm with ultrasonics it may well have, rock the car back and forward in neutral and with the handbrake off, the disks will have rusted and be stuck, spray a little WD40 onto the pads to free them up first though. Personally i'd drop the water out of the radiator and refill it and stick some anti-freeze in it, the stuff that was in there could well have gone off, i'd be tempted to drop the oil and do an engine flush as well but thats maybe a bit of overkill.

in addition to all the above you may also find the engine management system has lost its memory this is very common with rovers but not sure about fords if this has happened it will have to be trailered to a main agent to be re programed
mmm. well, as soon as youve got it running, change the oil and filter.
as to prep; clean the dizzy cap and rotor arm, clean the plugs, make sure the air filter is cleanish, and charge the battery.
All the above,but no one mentioned the clutch plates though-wouldn't they be seized after a year of non use-just an opinion:-/
if you disconect the battery and cover the car so no dust or liquids get into the engine bay maybe it will let you do that

there is nothing wrong that wasn't wrong before maybe the battery needs attention as long as the tires didn't dry rot you should be fine
New battery, spark plugs, HT leads (Zetec engines eat them), spray everything with WD40, oil+filter change, change the oil in the gearbox, renew the coolant (drop & refill),
Whilst the spark plugs are out, chuck a load of Redex down the holes and allow to soak in. After 10-15 minutes, try to start the engine without the plugs. It will smoke. Refit plugs after 30 seconds of turning over. Start engine. Wear gasmask - this will smoke like mad. Engine should now be clean.
Drain the fuel from the tank and refill with a can of super unleaded/Optimax and then drive to the petrol station, top up with same petrol and add a load of Redex - one or two bottles.
If the engine will not start, go to Halfords and buy a can of EasyStart. This stuff starts tractors that have not been started for 20 years.
Take it easy for 250 miles - the shocks may be soggy, the brakes will be vague at best and a few other things need wearing back in.
After 500-1000 miles of use, drop the oil, fit a new filter and refill with good oil.

you should have a fresh battery, fresh gas, and oil :)
i would suggest checking all fluid levels. including battery which will possibly have to be recharged anyway. check tire pressures and condition. but it is imperative.. that you drain some oil off the sump if your not going to renew. so that you can run some new oil into the rocker cover so this will soak onto the cam/s.. ( have you ever started a car and heard the tappets rattling when the oil has broken down, or oil level is low. the top end is dry.).. imagine that any oil that is in the engine has had a yr to drain fully to the bottom end,.. finally. i really would recommending that you replace the petrol. unleaded breaks down. so new is required. but you may need a carburetor cleaner.. to clear the residue out of your carbs.
Check that you have enough engine oil in the engine, check the coolant level. Charge the battery, remove the spark plugs and the main HT lead from the ignition coil. Spin the engine over on the key and observe what comes out of the spark plug holes (hopefully no water) if nothing comes out of the plug holes drip a small amount of engine oil down the spark plug holes into the cylinders and wait 5 minutes. Then turn the engine over with the key again (this will help getting the compression up in the cylinders). Then if the oil pressure light is still on spin the engine over on the key until the warning light goes out. Refit the spark plugs, reconnect the leads insure you have fuel and it should start. There will be a bit of smoke due to the oil you put in the cylinders and maybe some black smoke due to the car staying still for so long.
firstly make sure the battery is charged, and you have new fuel in the tank.
take the plugs out and give a spray with wd40 replace the plugs check the rotor arm and dissy cap make sure that they are clean.
start it up do not go straight put on a main road as your brakes are gonna be naff drive around a garage area with brakes slightly applied to get the years worth of rust off of them.
