Cant get many SUV's for £1000. In fact you'll be lucky to get a car to do 300 mile regular trips for less that £1000. Get a 1.2 Corsa, cheap to run and insure
for less than a grand you are'nt gonna get much more than an old banger
Buy a corsa, they great wee cars and economical as well

Get a Pajero.good wheels, good drive and always safe
Well dear, you are in a dream world if you want a ll that for £1000.
But nevertheless, in answer to your questions consider:
VW Polo - economical - good engine and generally well engineered. Also low insurance.
Best engine - consider Honda civic hatchback - the VTEC engine is one of the best in the world (but not for £1000)
Diesel engines are economical and last for ever - but generally more expensive to buy.
Personally I find that the Bentley serves me well and has given us years of trouble free motoring

Vauxhall Corsa would be good. There are always loads on the market and parts are cheap. If you are going to pay less that £1000 then it will be an older car and you will need to do frequent maintenance. The smaller the engine, the cheaper the insurance but if you're doing a lot of mileage you'd be better to have at least a 1.4 L engine, if going for petrol.
Try a 10yr old Mondeo, or an early Xantia diesel.
