Is it over heating?, If not , check to see if it has a timing sensor on the flywheel. Just a little one bolt piece of electronic heartache. Jeeps have one of these and if they go out , you get intermitent starts and stops. They run about 80 bucks and are really tough to put in as they are in a really tight place. Check your Owners manual to see if there is one on the engine.
you have a head blockage somewhere. i would get it looked at incase you do a head gasket!
ok I have a '93 accord and I had the exact same problem.I took it into the shop and found that the problem was the ignition relay inside the engine.it could also be your distributor cap.I hope that helps thats what fixed the problem for me!

good luck!
flooded with petrol floats stuck, not enough oil in engine and it seizes and cant free its self till it cools down, just getting to old ?
the older an engine gets the harder it is to turn over.a tune up and a check up of the engine would be in line. your engine is getting too hot and causes vapor lock in the manifold.
its running rich, classic sign of too much fuel as compared to air
Its an old vehicle so some of these modern technical jobs wont work. Try changing your anti-freeze cap under the hood. Or make sure your cooling fan is kicking in when it is running. All else fails and your in a hurry raise the hood when it is stalled. Will make it start up faster. You just gotta love this old vehicles. Some can be very temperamental.
If I remember correctly, the Land Rover of that era had Stromberg carb(s). They were an absolute sod for flooding as the float-needles were very prone to ridging, and if the vehicle had an electric fuel pump, as many Landies did, if you left the igntion on, and the float needle didn't seal, you could fill the entire engine up with petrol. I know, I left my ignition on at one time to check my trailer lights, and the engine filled up with about 2 gallons of petrol. Mine was a 2.6 6-cyl LWB 109 S3 petrol.

I think you will probably have some success with a partial, or full, carburettor overhaul. new float and float needle, and new diaphragm on the Stromberg. These carbs are also prone to air-leaks around the throttle-spindle, although that wouldn't necessarily give you the fault you are currently experiencing.

I tell you what. I've just remembered that Land Rovers had some trouble with fuel vapourising in the fuel line to the carburettor. The answer was to change the fuel line to a thicker walled tubing, lag the fuel line to prevent it gettting hot, or re-route it away from any heat sources.
could be fuel pump as they are electric.
or ignition fault some were but it does seam electricle any way.
