I drive a small truck. How much overhang is permitted on loads?

I have been asked to deliver a load on a small truck and it over hangs at the back, what is the permitted overhang on the a vehicle. I thought it was about 18" but my employer says its 3 metre. Whose right??

Answers:
tell your employer to check his facts you are breaking the law! its 20ins and with a warning triangle with it! dont take any loads out with more than this overhang.
3 METRES? that sounds far too much!

A warning triangle must be fitted to a rear overhanging load of 1.2 mtr or more, and must have warning lights if travelling in the dark. depending how long your bed is on the truck governs the length of overhang. usually more than this comes under special types categories .
