What are the chances of loosing your luggage at an airport?

pack some essentials in a carry on, clothes for a day for instance. That way if your bags get lost, you have something to where. I have a friend who travels alot and she said she does this, she has had bags get lost, but they do get them to her by the next day. They will ask where you are staying, when you report it. Don't worry to much about it, you will drive yourself nutty.

About the same as the plane leaving on time. Always split your items evenly between all the suitcases. so that if 1 goes missing you still have half your stuff. plus always (hand luggage allowance permitting) put a few mix-n-match in. so you have something until they find yours.

I travel a lot between Europe and USA and my luggage never got lost on an international flight.
But one time it did on a USA flight. Of course they found it (it went on an other flight accidentally) and their carrier company brought it to my home after they spotted and retrieved it (it was a return home trip). So don't worry, it might get lost but eventually you'll find it, it won't disappear from the face of the earth.
It doesn't happen that often. Make sure you put luggage labels and get travel insurance if you are that worried. It's just a risk you have to take if you are going to fly, there's nothing you can do about it.
Usually very low, but due to the high risk security procedures, the chances may be higher. I would suggest not to pack any real valuables eg jewelry or money just in case!! good luck
If you have a connection then the chances are higher, especially if it is tight or you get delays. Direct flights are rarely a problem. I travel at least once a week and lose my luggage once every 2 months so 1 in 10 but I connect through Heathrow, Paris and Frankfurt a lot and these are massive airports. However, I have always got it back within 24hrs! There are horror stories but these are rare. Take the advice of the other people on this site concerning insurance, taking some stuff hand luggage etc. Personally I do not sweat it and I never take it on the plane cos that is really a pain in the *** for all.
I have had my luggage lost 3 times. It did eventually turn up on those 3 ocassions one or two days later. But I have know people who lost their luggage for good. It never did turn up. If you do not change planes, the probability is much less of loosing it than if you do change planes.

It is actually quite a low risk.
However, if your bags are delayed at the beginning of your holiday, the airline should provide you with enough cash to buy necessary items. If they do not forward them to you within a few hours, you can claim more immediately.
If you lose items permanently, you can claim from the airline, but they will try to limit their liability by invoking the Warsaw Convention, which, amongst other things, limits the amounts passengers may claim for death, injury, loss or damage.
HOWEVER! If you can show negligence or recklessness on the part of the airline or its agents (eg baggage handlers, other 'partner' airlines etc) you may well achieve a much higher settlement.
The formula for caculating the amount payable is rather complex, but limits you to a certain number of SDR (special drawing rights) per kilo. If you can prove they were negligent, these limits are waived.
I have sucessfully claimed from airlines on a number of occcasions when flying as a passenger. It takes a few strong letters and phone calls, but mention of the relevant section of the Warsaw Convention usually works, as they realise you know what you are talking about!

quite spooky really! it would appear that every 5th flight , something you are taking is misplaced. but if you are going to Egypt your quids in, Cairo airport has the largest lost luggage facility in the world, and 80% of all lost luggage passes through or ends up in Cairo. i went to Australia in 2004 travelling from Dubai to Brisbane..my golf clubs went to Cairo and my bag went to hong kong!
when i was flying to.blah i lost all 3 of them when i was flying back i lost 1 so i would say 60% +
