I want to buy a second hand small car for £5k - which one?

I have £5k to spend on a small car but when I ask friends which one is best they all give me different answers. Peugout 206, Citroen Saxo, VW Golf (bit expensive)?? I'm a learner so I need a safe car which is in a low insurance group. Oh and can someone recommend a place to buy one? xx

i have a v reg toyota yaris, got it in november 04 for £4000 never had a problem with it, v reliable and cheap to run, i have the 1.0 so insurance is a snip too, i would reccomend a dealership for the make you decide on, they often throw in extras like free servicing or money off and usually have handled the buying and selling of the car since new and so have the service history etc.
the boot isnt massive but there is a surprising amout of space for passengers even in the back seat, i have driven to newcastle in it (from liverpool ~3 1/2 hours including some time in stationary traffic) i didnt get uncomfortable but the small engine does get a bit noisy around 70 mph. i think its a fantastic car and when i get rid i will be replacing it with a newer model yaris.
honda civic
Vauxhall Corsa - small engine 1.1 or 1.2 and if you are in the UK Car Giant there pretty safe I got mine from there and had a budget same as yours and I havent had any probs with the car and for that money you would probably pick up one which is only about a year old.
VW Polo is a good one. German cas are always reliable as are Japanese cars. Get it from Ebay, both my previous cars were from there and both of them were absolute bargains and in really good nick. I got a Nissan Micra for 400 quid, it was immaculate and drove like a dream.
Go with the Honda
Renault Clio 1.5 dci (not the newest one).

The 1.5 diesel is £50 a year to tax and will get you 65mpg no probs.

I don't know what region you live in so forgive me for suggesting looking on ebay.

Good luck with your search.
My cousin used ebay and auto-trader to find hers. She was looking at KA's which i detest and punto's (which again i would not reccomend) So next best answer would be a vauxhall corsa there cheap enough all round and look good. Email me if you;d like help.. i love looking for bargins online
I'd say go with a Peugeot 206, it's cute, nippy, easy to repair and cheap to run. I have one and it's my 3rd Peugeot , also had a 205 and a 106.
They are damn good cars!
can you increase the budget to £6500 if so you will be able you buy a new Kia picanto they are low insurance the build quailty isn't as good a the VW but they are cheap to run and the get you from a to b the biggest problem is long distant travel the are just not comfy and not having a boot but you are able to get people in the back and have leg room. You can probabley get second hand on for £4250 but they are still new car brought out in 2004 04plate.

I got one for my first car have had no prblems with it it a 54 plate and done near on 23000 miles it works it looks good (not the sexiest just good) i'm of getting a new car when it is 3 years old just because i need a car with a boot and tow bar and they are the only reasons.

Go to your local dealer you may pay a little more but you know where the are and where to go just in case
well how would you like me to start! when getting a new car its like a second relationship, because not only are you looking for some thing with good looks it needs looking after.if not it will not perform its duty? so hear what i suggest depending on what you need it for is the biggest question?if you don't go very far with it i.e. less than 50 miles less than a week you will parable need a 1.1 Lt car ranging from p reg-new what i found was a good car was a fiesta,as it was cheep,on fuel insurance, tax & mot's. and thay doon look to bad? but if you go on long distances you will need a bigger car then you are looking at big money?the total oppasit compared to a nice 1.1 fiesta! but with your five grand you can geet a fiesta for about 3000 pounds pay for your insurance for the year and still have change! but now the choice is yours? but ask different people as well thay might reconmend somethink else!
corsa or ford ka both not bad better than french
& cheaper to insure
as someone above said the renault clio. you could even get a NEW ONE ( model-campus )for your £5000 which will give you 3yrs warranty and 1yrs road tax.( have a look on the renault web site and look under offers ..new offers will start on the 1st oct also ) i would definately consider the new one ! and they are great cars to drive.
I have Peugeot 207 diesel my wife loves it and so do I
'My wife just purchased a VW Lupo, they are excellent cars, holds it price being a VW, reliable, solid inside and out, cheap tax and about 40+ miles to the gallon on the 1Litre. You could probably pick up a 'as new one' with about 10,000 miles on the clock for about £4200 2003 plate. They are very nippy also. The SE model gives you that bit more style.
Good Hunting.
