Can you bump start an automatic car?

ive been told that it is posible to do it just wonderd if anyone knew this was true and if anyone has done it

Answers:
I thought you couldn't.
yes it is possible but you have to get it going alot faster than a manual car where you can pop the clutch
No its not possible, you cannot do it.
I don't know, but can I add you should't bump start any car these days, because you dont want unburnt fuel making it's way through to the catalytic converter and ruining it.

Just boost the battery and start it normally!
yes if you want to trash your drive shaft
NO you cant, you need to jump start it, you could wreck the box!
NOPE, WHEN YOU HAVE A TORQUE CONVERTER THERE IS NO MECHANICAL LINK TO YOUR TRANS. IT GOES MECHANICAL- FLUID TRANSFER- MECHANICAL ITS KOOL HOW IT WORKS CHECK IT OUT HERE..
http://auto.howstuffworks.com/torque-con. this tell you how your transmission/ torque converter work..
Do not try this, as you will severly damage the transmission. This only works on manual cars when you can pop the clutch. Smack whoever told you this, because they could have cost you alot of money.
No.
no as i asked my friend he is a mechanic no you cant
sorry
No. Manuals Maybe
NO NO NO you can do a lot of damage and cost you a bomb to put it right.>>if you must jump leads but better still, treat yourself to a new battery
Dont even think about it. !!
No you cannot bump start or tow a car with automatic transmission or else you will wreck the gearbox !
Yes you can but you have to be doing 30 mph plus in neutral and you put it into drive
No it is impossible to do it
only if it has a rear secondary hydraulic pump, ie early borgwarner type 30s and mercedes transmissions. even then it is still a tow start at 30mph.
no i dont think you can i think it messes up the ignition too
you can jump start an auto but not bump start!
No way to do that
You can but it is risky. The only Automatic gearbox's I know of that are strong enough to handle are the Jaguar gearbox fitted to the straight 6 engine, or the box shape Ford Granada 2.3 or 2.8. You need to be doing 30-40MPH, then stick it in gear, but in most cars you'll simply burst the solonoids.
NO WAY
Jonney is right old borg warner 35 with secondary pumps can be tow started. As a matter of interest the early minis with the AP transmission could also be tow started this was removed on later versions. And yes i have tow started both types of gear boxes Regards Mick
You cant bum start an auto but you can start it by towing ,you have to get to 32 miles per hour then it just starts. Its a strange feeling when it happens the engine just kickes in,i had my car towed many times. It had a fully charged battery but just would not start,in the end i found the air filter was getting damp so changed the position further back started every time.
