Where can I go offroad driving in SW Scotland?

I'm trying to find decent places to off-road in SW Scotland, Ayrshire, Wigton, Dumfries - that sort of area.

I don't want to go to a quarry with a club or to a track meet type event - just want to go with a few mates and drive through some old tracks in that sort of area.

I found an old road off the Queens Way in Galloway Forrest park which was the old Edinburgh road - does anyone know if that is any use and how challanging it is?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers guys.

Answers:
Ask at the local county council. The rights of way officer could give you the road map or ordinance survey references to the roads and byways that you could drive legally. The other way is to ask at your nearest 4x4 club, who I'm sure will have the information, as they drive on these roads fairly often when they go off roading. If you buy one of the Landrover publications or look for Landrover clubs on the web, you should be able to get the contact number/address of a local club near you. Hope this helps.
