What year does motor car tax become free?

Answers:
Unfortunatly car Tax does not become free. You car is exempt if it has been registered before the cut off year of 1974. This year has been frozen by our friends in Parliment (probably lost sleep over all that cash slipping between there fingers).
The rule was originaly that when you vehicle became 25 yrs old it became tax exempt, but was repealed some years ago. They probably underestimated the number of Classic cars still around, and the potential loss of revenue caused by all those modern well built cars easily reaching 25 years old.
18rs ? when your car becomes classic.
in the uk.
never unfortunatly!!
The same year that hell freezes over!
Car tax never becomes free but if your car is 25 years old older it becomes exempt from it.
Never in the US. I have a 1939 ford coupe I bought it as a rust bucket from a guy, fixed it up completely restored and the taxes are still $12 a year.
25 years, but who wants to drive an old rust heap
All vehicles except buses and lorries used commercially, that were constructed before 1 January 1973, may tax in the 'historic vehicle' tax class.

There is no charge for this class of vehicle tax.
Was a fixed date I think Cars registered before 1972 (I think) are exempt.
Don't zero emission vehicles get free tax as well?
it will become free when human start walking with hands instead of legs.lol
It was when 25 years old under the conservatives when first introduced, but tony's lot froze it at prior to1.1.73, and they say produced before but you can bet they mean first registered before and British Leyland vehicles routinely spent months rusting in a field between being made and delivered to dealers, likewise Jap mobiles spent months sailing around the Horn in a junk, jap mobiles were built in Japland by Japs then not Swindon by highly skilled british technicians or sunderland by Geordies..
Car 25 years and over are exempt from tax as they become classic cars,
it was 25 years but apparently they scraped it when the new tax bands came in?
