Coming from a BMW garage all I would do is, run the engine, switch on the air con, turn the blowers to cold, sense of feel, does it feel cold??
If unsure we use temp probes and place it in the centre air vents.
Note on MINI and BMW that the blower temp will be cooler at the centre than to feet and windscreen, as research shows cold head warm feet you stay awake allegedly!

Take it to a garage, they will prolly test it for free as its a 2 minute job.
Test the aircon? Surely, switch it on, and if you get cold air, then it's working. If it isn't working, then the system probably needs recharging as even the best systems leak gas and go empty after about 2 or 3 years.

turn on air con and switch to recirculation. close all but one air vent. place thermometer/temp probe in open vent. temp should drop to 8-14 degrees
