Will petrol damage a diesel engine and what to do if you get petrol in the engine?

Petrol in a Diesel engine is the worst way round but if you have not started or if you have then not for long then the problem as far as gettign rid of the petrol is realtively cheap.
Call your breakdown company if you have one and explain whats happened and they will take it to the nearest garage that can dispose of contaminated fuel. It will cost around £105 for labour and around £1/litre of fuel they remove plus obvioulsy paying to fill it up. Then have the garage check the injectors, cylinders etc. for any damage - with any luck it may not cost you more than £150 to have the tank drained and the car checked.
Then put a big Diesel sticker over your fuel cap to remind you.

I know that one way to another (petrol to diesel or deisel to petrol) is worse but I'm afraid I don't know which way but if you realise you've done it at the petrol station don't drive as you may be able to syphon it out before it gets to the engine.
Dont start it and get it drained straight away.

Yes this will damage the engine if the car is started. If you have made the mistake and only put a little in you can fill the petrol tank up with petrol and you may get away with it. If not you'll need to flush the system or take it to a Garage!
Well it depends on how much. I know on diesel, during the winter you can add a little to keep it from gelling to keep from buying the expensive additives. You don't want much in there. You can generally say you will be ok with no more that one gallon to every 20 gallons of diesel. Hope this helps.
YES! Don't turn the key!! If you have and the car's ground to a halt, it's time to call the pro's in sharpish.and it can cost..if you haven't started it yet, you can just get the tank drained - by a professional - and fill up with diesel to dilute any residue.sorry not to have better news..
Yes, it most certainly can damage the engine. (Diesel engine works on such a high pressure that there is a risk the petrol may even explode in extreme cases.) If you've managed to fill up with petrol, don't drive but get a professional to look into it - draining the tank is the least you must do, but you may need to flush the fuel line and change filters as well.
They do say that every day several people accidentally fill up diesel cars with petrol and then drive away without realising. Apparently the car just stops after a while, and once it's sorted out all is well and happy ending, but I certainly wouldn't risk it!
If you put diesel in a petrol engine if you have run the car then you will need a new engine.
If you haven't moved the car then you may be lucky and draining the fuel out and putting petrol in may be all thats required.
Basically if you drove the car with diesel in it then you need a new engine as it will soon seize up
If you put petrol in, the fluiid will have to be extract from the engine, and it will have to be done carefully. the petrol also won't go through the engine, because of the composition

Diesel fuel systems use the diesel fuel as their lubricant. Petrol does not have the require lubricity (isn't "oily" enough).
Modern diesel fuel systems (especially common-rail, and pumpe-duse systems) run at very high pressures and have very tight tolerances. Only a few seconds of running with petrol can cause irreparable damage to occur to the fuel pumps and injectors - you'll need to replace the entire fuel system at a cost of between £1,000 and £4,000.
The fuel systems in older diesel engines (indirect-injection) ran at much lower pressures and wider tolerances, so can handle a few minutes running before serious wear occurs. The components are also much cheaper and easier to replace.
If you accidentally put petrol into a modern diesel car, DO NOT START THE ENGINE. Push the car to the corner of the forecourt, and call out your breakdown service, who'll recover it to a garage that can drain the tank (probably cost about £500, might be covered by your insurance).

Yes it will mate. You'll damage your engine, the piston rings, the pistons and valves. The fuel system will need cleaning out. Get a new fuel filter. Your injection system will need checking over. Get it sorted soon as but don't start the engine mate.

Hi, It depends how much you put in?? I have done this once I had a Renault traffic van at the end of a long day I went to fuel up ready for the next morn. and realised I was adding Unleaded and not Diesel I had got about 1/4 of a tank in I filled the tank to the brim with Diesel and got away with it yes it smoked a little but was fine. The ideal solution is to drain the tank even just syphon it out.
But if there isn't much in there then fill up with diesel.
It's not like some of the answers you've had one person saying diesel engines cannot handle the explosive properties of petrol! twoddle! It's because petrol doesn't compress the same as diesel, hence C.I compression ignition (diesel) and S.I spark ignition (petrol)

I have just experienced this problem with a VW Passat. The car had to have the injectors and the fuel pump replaced at a cost of around £2k. The only hope is if the problem is spotted prior to the engine being started or if the amount of petrol is very small (it has been known for people to add a small amont of petrol to a trucks diesel to stop it freezing in the winter).

Depends on what ratio of diesel/petrol mix is. It's not too much of a problem if you put a little petrol in an empty tank, just fill it to the brim with diesel and it will be OK, despite what the scaremonger's say.
Why spent £100s getting 5 litres removed from a 50 litre tank?
Sometimes it even increases the power output..
