I was driving down the street that I don't live on and hit a tree that wasn't there.

Now, for the crown jewel of all dumd-@ssed reasons why the accident wasn't 'my fault': an engineer (who else) actually told me to my face that since everything in the known universe on a molecular level was not static but in constant motion he could not have hit the other car from behind as it sat, waiting to turn left; he felt they actually hit EACH OTHER, so therefore, his insurance should not be responsible for the other party. My response was, " quantum mechanics aside, in Alabama your car struck the other from behind.".
I cannot make this kind of crap up, folks.
