Start by digging out around the sleeper, then dig a trench the same lengh as the sleeper or as long as possible. Take the chair bolts out and pull the sleeper in to the trench. you will need a few men to do this. once you have the old sleeper out, do not disturb the bed because the new sleeper will not lie right. Place the new sleeper in the trench and slide into position you may need to drill new holes for the chair bolts. put new chair bolts in and use new ferrules on each bolt! If you cant get the sleeper back under the rail then you need a rail jack to lift it up, don't lift it too far or you will cripple the rail. Fill in around the sleeper with the ballast you took out before you may need to tamp it down for this you will need a tamping machine or hand held equivalent. Paint a cross on the old sleeper so no one will use it.
This is part of your standard training you should no this!

Personally, you should think very carefully about what questions you ask on here if you are an employee of Network Rail or one of it's contractors.
I'm a train driver, but have previously been employed as a Stoneblower operator and S & C tamper operator. If your question is serious and not a joke, you should be removed from your position until you are properly trained and capable of the type of work you are being asked to carry out.
Cowboy railway contractors absolutly disgust me! Most of this type of people are ex "Tarmac gang" labourours that now wear orange vests instead of yellow ones because the railways pay better. There is no other way to describe these people as COWBOYS.
A good example of these COWBOYS at work is the Potters Bar accident a few years ago.
If you are for real, then you should question if you are capable and indeed properly qualified and experieinced to carry out the type of work you are undertaking.
You should not be asking questions on this forum on a professional level.
Can you imagine if a BMW / VW / Ford (etc) technician asked a question on here about how to repair a car.

Look Mate. You should know this if you work for the Rail Industry, as its apart of your training. If you are not sure then speak to your manager or report it to Control, and next time do not post on Yahoo Answers as you could end up with out a JOB, especially if the bosses discover that you are posting questions so badly composed and not checking with your manager on what you should be doing!
