How must a pay & display parking area be marked?

Where can I get information regarding how an On Street Pay & Display parking bay must be marked and signed?

I got my first ever parking ticket today, (in 26 yrs of driving)and am feeling a bit sore as I genuinely was unaware that I was in a Pay & Display parking area.
There was not a parking restriction sign between the marked bay I was in and the end of the parking area. I just parked my car and walked towards the town centre, not passing a sign, or pay machine or any indication of a parking restriction.

At £60 or £30 if I am quick, I would love to be able to argue that the parking restriction was not correctly marked.

Any info. appreciated.

Mike

It sounds like the "signage", the tecnical word for this, is invalid.

In your position I would appeal immediately to the council giving the facts.
