I've just bought a 1.4 gt punto engine and the timing belt is off how do i know if the timing is right thanks

If the belt is off how do you know the engine is any good ? if the belt has snapped previously then the valves might be bent ! Any way , there is timing Marks on the pulley`s on these cars so you will need to just line them up , then turn the engine using a socket and ratchet on the bottom pulley . if it turns OK after a few revolutions then the chances are you got it spot on . modern day timing belts have marks on then aswell so you just line these up on the pulley`s .
usualy the only way to tell for sure is to check it with a "timing light" and compaire it to factory specs.
some cars.(maybe not urs) have indents in the timing gears.if you line those up it should work.beats using a timing device and spending alot of money to do it
If you go and buy a new belt, many of the manufacturers put directions in them. If it doesn't have any, then find a repair manual. There are marks, dots, or grooves on the crank and cam that have to be lined up properly. Once those are lined up, the belt may have lines on it as well that go on these same marks.
