A little more explanation.

When you put your foot down in this fella you feel like your driving a 7 series BMW. By this i mean you know you are in charge of something with power. The noise the diesel makes enhances this somewhat. This is a good thing, some cars scream there way to second gear this baby roars.

If you do a great deal of Motorway driving you will have no worries with a Bora. I have driven all kinds of cars and the Bora holds it's own as far as cruising ability goes. You wont find many more comfortable cars either. I'll say no more.

Fuel consupmtion is exceptional, You'll think something is wrong with the Gauge.

The Bora wont let you down as far as street cred goes, it looks good inside and out. The instruments have a brushes aluminium effect which hasn't been over done so much as it looks out of place it a VW. The instruments as buttons Glow saphire blue and red at night, slickest night time dash I have ever owned. I would suggest getting the silver model as other colours somehow dont work as well.

The boot will happily accomodate 4 or five sets of Golf clubs and the back seats fold down to increase the storage space. The front seats adjust in all directions and there's even a handy little button to turn of the interior alarm so that when you lock the car your dog doesn't set the alarm off.

If you want to throw this around country lanes, you'll have a shock. It doesn't corner well and the back end quite easily gets lost around roundabouts. There seems to be a power loss situation between First and Second Gear but it's probably just my driving.

This car is for Golf drivers who are getting a little older and perhaps might be exchanging the Dog for a family. The Bora will keep you amused on the country roads but is prodominantly a miles car. If you fit the bill there is nothing in my opinion that comes close, and that sturdy German engineering will save the bills in the long run.

Aftersales service is flawless.Pick up and return or courtesy car on services.

The automatic windscreen wipers are seriously cool, as soon as it starts raining harder the wipers up the pace. You don't need to worry about it. I just wish they would but one on the rear screen, whoever decided it wasn't needed needs shooting.

One last thought, I have it on good authority that people who don't enjoy driving cars bigger than a corsa wont mind driving this car. It's somehow easy to manouver and doesn't feel to big.

You wont go far wrong buying this whoever you are.

The popular belief is that VW is a good solid quality brand and I can only agree with this as I have had no trouble with my car with the exception of the odd rattle here and there as it aged.

I had the 90bhp SE model which was an adequate drive and more suited to the more composed driver. The 90bhp TDi Golf definitely wouldn't win any races or provide handling to put a smile on the face of those boy racers amongst us. This said it was a fantastic reliable car that provided enough power to sit comfortably on the motorway as well as be responsive around town.

The real benefit of owning a Golf TDi was the fuel economy which was fantastic and was often providing 45-60mpg which was fantastic for those long journeys and reducing overall running costs.

Having owned a Golf Mk 4 for over 3 years I am suitably impressed and would certainly recommend this car to others as indeed I did when I sold mine on

the reason this golf may be sluggish is because of the only 90bhp get the 115 bhp or more but the more bhp you have the more fuel its going to take but i got 56 mpg in my 115 bhp good luck
A cheap Honda or a cheap Toyota.
A VW diesel, hands down
Get a Volkswagen Diesel. Service is about every 5k miles and gas mileage is better than those hybrids. Diesels maintain their durability and resale much better than any type of gas vehicle. If you can find a diesel, get it - you may pay a little more for it but they last forever.
i had a new seat ibiza three years ago, just under £8000, 1.2, ibiza s, air con, cd player, its been a great car and cheap to run
honda insight 60/66 is the best right now. go to their website for more info.
I will agree that a VW diesel is probably your best bet . but there are two problems .

1) They are not available in every state (not in CA or NY) .
2) They are being discontinued after the 2006 model year.

Next best choice: A Prius hybrid with the $3200 tax CREDIT (that is HUGE, people)

After that, I would be inclined to go with the Yaris.
Although, I have gotten really good mileage with my Saturn Ion, which costs a lot less than ANY of those other cars . I average about 32 between town and highway driving.
NEW HONDA 'S ALSO THEY OFFER 5 YEARS SERVICING FOR £500 THAT'S OVER HALF PRICE
Corolla or Civic - they not very expensive ($14,000 - $17,000 range) both very reliable and have around 30/40 mpg city/hwy. Service interval is about 3,500 miles but the service is cheap.
Actually any car will need regular service, may be not as often but still, for example, Volkswagen has 5000 miles service interval but it's more expensive to service.
try a dual fuel..on lpg it costs less per litre..however you get 20% less mileage per litre..but this is outwieghed by the cheap as chips fuel..however you will still need some petrol..lpg needs it to start and reach running temp before it switches over (automatic) to lpg..20 ltrs of petrol lasts me 4 months.i drive exclusively on gas..the range of my vehicle is 700 miles if i fill both tanks.(.might be handy in the highlands)if you go for the zafira..get the 1800 not 1600 if you intend to have dual fuel..(better pull away..)some people say its a waste of time..but mine has 80000 miles on it but because the engine wear is less on gas i have an engine with the wear of an engine thats done 20000 miles.
try a vw lupo 1.0 great my wifes is so good i use it insted of my slk
nissan micras
Doing 30k p.a.

you need economy, i.e. diesel,

and reliability.

Reliability surveys suggest you should look at :

Honda
Mazda
Nissan
Toyota

Hope this helps.
I have been looking for a new company car. I have been looking for a Diesel automatic. I have decided on an Audi A4 or A6. The reason being 40mpg combined for the 1.9td.

A 2003 model will cost roughly 13K with leather, but the amazing MPG.

You could probably get a better return from a Prius or something similar, However you may be like me, wanting a modicum of comfort for 30,000 miles a year.
There's one major problem with diesels, namely, that since Katrina took out a large section of diesel refineries, diesel now costs more than premium unleaded in most states. Oh, and the VW diesel is what, about 25k?

Corolla 5sp. about 16-18k purchase price, 41 mpg hwy, bigger than a Yaris (that gets the same mpg btw, but olny costs about 13k), 5k service intervals, and no plugs needed until 120k mi.
I am thinking that the Honda Civic (non-hybrid) will be your best bet. You can get an LX model with all the basics for an MSRP of around $17,000, which is not terribly bad. (although with the 2006 Honda Clearance, you could probably get it in the $15,000 range if you are a great negotiator)

The Civic gets 30 MPG city, 40 MPG highway, is fairly reliable, inexpensive to run, and can go 7500 miles between oil changes.
mondeo tdci, around 12k between services and around 45 to the gallon, no cambelt to worry about and none of the enormous german service charges, and cheaper to buy in the first place.
Buy an electric car: http://www.milesautomotive.com/products_.
Electric Vehicles can do 250,000km without a battery and brakes replacement, and 1Mkm without motor replacement or requiring repair or maintenance of the drivetrain.
