BMW523I Auto transmission prob?

DO not go to the dealer! They will rip you off for a new tranny. Find a shop with the O-pec computer. On the drivers side just to the left of the brake peddle is a black plastic covering with a twist cap. Have the shop plug into the computer there. When you get a read out it should tell you if anything computer or electrical has gone wrong. If your car is clear there then you know it is defiantly mechanical. In which case a new tranny can cost 2k or more. Make sure the independent shop is experienced in this and have them replace it. Ask to sign an estimate contract before they begin and do not let them charge you to much more than what the estimate was. The shops labor cost will be way under the dealers labor cost. Parts will cost the same at either place. Do not be schmoozed by the dealer. They advertise that they have a BMW master mechanic on staff, big deal, its like the pro on a golf course, you never see him and he never helps your swing anyway. Good luck getting this fixed! Do not be afraid to be bold, they are less likely to rip you off if you sound like you know what your talking about. Search the net for an after market BMW maintenance book and do your research.
most likely you will have to change the transmission - sounds like a common problem with bmw
