98-GOLF 14E noise from cam shaft?

thinking of buying 98 Golf 1400 16v.got a noisy cam shaft but otherwise ok.anybody any info or suggestions is it a big problem?any other problems with this model?

Answers:
Is it a solid lift cam or hydraulic?
could just be the tappets wanting ajusted or the camshaft is worn, not a big job but labour costs will make it expensive
Cam belt may have slipped a tooth / or camshaft worn due to lack of oil changes . if it still run`s ok with no missfires then it is a easy repair by either changing the cam belt or the camshaft and doing a service on it .
I would suggest that if there is anything wrong with the top end of the golf that it means that maintenance has been skipped, there are plenty of other golfs around, move on
you dont say what type of noise but it could be just the tappets but get a mechanic to check it for you
