Do I really need a bigger car?

My wife is only a few weeks' away from giving birth to our first child. A couple of friends we know who have recently produced sprogs have found the need to trade in their sensible family hatchbacks for seven-seaters or Volvo estates. The reason they say, it that they need the extra space for the pushchairs and other associated gumpf. Is this really necessary?

Answers:
A 'sensible family hatchback' is just that, like it says on the tin. Bigger cars are allegedly suitable for bigger families. Babies do need a lot of stuff it is true but nothing a hatchback can't handle.Buggies are generally smaller and more compact when folded nowadays for convenience. So, in my humble opinion, it isn't necessary to buy a huge hulk of a car in preparation for one tiny baby.and associated gumpf!! Good luck with the new arrival x
I don't think so. And besides, why don't you try to help the environment..every little bit helps. And congratulations to you and your wife!
No (when i was a lad we were 5 in the back of a ford fiesta)
I drive a 1991 Honda Accord, and as you know they're small.. I have a 3 person family and still have room for 2 more people in the cabin of the car.. the trunk is nice and roomy and has plenty of room for 3 or more strollers, bags, etc etc.

You don't NEED a bigger car, most people use new children as an excuse to buy a bigger car/newer car.

Just my two cents.
All kinds of people have had children. Some have very small vehicles and make it alright. Why don't you wait and see if you can tolerate the inconvenience. You definitely can make it work
it is necessary if u have enough breds or budgets.. if u have then, GOOD, u could already let them see ur new, very nice & cool ride, if none then stick to what u have.
nooo that car should fit just finee
your car is fine, spend the money on your baby instead.
I don't think so. We always managed perfectly fine with a medium sized hatchback and 2 children, so long as its got a good sized boot on it it will be fine.
IF its the only child theirs no need for a bigger car.
I didn't change my hatch back and now my child is 15 months.glad i didn't.
You don't need a 7 seater or a volvo estate, just get a decent sized saloon.
The thing I've noticed is it's not so much the size of the car it's the problem, it's the size of modern "designer" buggies. There seems to be a competition on how rugged and arty the can be made, so there getting bigger. Keep it simple.
Only attention whores feel the need to get a big car and use the baby as an axcuse.
A|s long as you can fit a buggy and a few carrier bags into your boot there is no need to change your car.
At the birth of my daughter I bought a smallish 4 door saloon, it holds way more than my wife and child can ever need on any journey.
