Why are roads black with white stripes?

All roads are the same does this mean countries have copied of each other?

Why not yellow with black stripes or white with black stripes, there would be more light at night. Just think when snow falls and besides the ice that comes with it you can see better. Makes sense to me.

Answers:
The black is a result of the petrolium pruducts used when creating ashfalt (road cover) and as you probably know - white stripes are for traffic lanes in you direction - and yellow is for traffic comming against you - i.e. traffic devider.
But I like the idea - yellow would be cewl -
Cause the Tarmac is black and the paint is white.
you, it seems, are in the minority from what you say.
but that would also be hard to see, because it would be blinding some people. also, that would cost more because they would need to paint everything.
ask the government
cos the dirt doesn't show up!
Glare brother, glare. The black road reduces the glare on the road
cos white roads with black stripes would get ever so dirty very quickly!
its better than orange n pink
Its the oil in the asphalt that makes the roads black. The white and yellow lines make for good reflectors. I`ve been laying asphalt for over 10 years now and it has never changed.
So you're suggesting that roads be painted yellow? It wouldn't work out very well. At the very least, you'd have to re-paint pretty often.

Tires are black, and asphalt is black.
Skid marks don't show on black.

Painting the entire road (as opposed to just the stripes) would make your tires slip more, since the painted surface would be slick. Especially compared to plain old asphalt.
Go to New Mexico many of the roads out there are red. I think it has to do with the materials available for road building.
White tar is as rare as rocking horse droppings.
because the person who designed them had a thing for zebras???
because there not white roads w/ black stripes.
Less confusing than yellow bricks w/ purple stripes.
white contrasts the black of the tar the best. there used to be reflective properties mixed with the paint but it seems that theres not many doing that anymore. just white paint now days
why not black and red stripes or poka dots or rainbow its all for vision help however we all know most drivers aren't paying attention to the roads these days anyway it doesn't matter
