1986 Lotus Excel 2.2 160bhp £575
1990 Toyota Supra 3.0 234bhp £600
Good luck with your search.
anything Japanese, they are reliable and you can find them just about anywhere
Seat Ibiza- ive got one if youre interested- its very nice- 10 years old and its only done 68 000 miles- well looked after.
I recommend a Chevrolet Cavalier or a VW New Beetle. You cant get any cheaper than that!
Toyota! But your budget limits the amount of bhp to be honest.
Good luck.
140hp is too much for your first car dude, dont think you would be able to insure it either, get yourself diesel turbo or similiar, build up some no claims bonus before hitting the big toys drive carefully!!
a mini
140 bhp for 600 quid?? Then, I presume, you have the further 1600 quid you need to insure it?
A peddle bike its the only thing you are going to get that cheap you will be able to depend on.
Any General Motors car with a 3.8 engine in it will be good. They last, have power, low maintenance and are excellent on fuel mileage.

Your can have my car for £600 and i will throw in as extras my 3 kids and my hubby who knows alot about cars..but on a serious side.i would suggest buying a car thats not got a big engine, powerful engine or the car insurance people will rape you of your money..until you have proved to be a good driver. Good luck
Forget 140bhp mate, you wouldn't get insured on it even if you could find one for 600 quid. If it's your first car you will wreck it within the year, and hopefully not do too much damage to yourself or other road users when you do. If you want to go fast, book yourself a track day at Cadwell Park, Donnington etc. Jensen Button might make it look easy, but you'll just make yourself look stupid. Ford Fiesta - cheap to run, cheap to insure, not bad handling - cheap parts and if you like doing work on it. it's a Ford, they're easy. Jap parts can be expensive depending on what you get. Learn to drive well before you learn to drive fast or end up another dead statistic.
Toyota all the way!
ford scorpio. lot of car for the money
