Seriously though, look at Auto trader. Small diesel probably the best bet (as long as she is not likely to fill it with petrol). Spend about 60-70% of your budget on the car, the rest on getting it professionally checked over, serviced and sorted out.
Look at small Peugeot 106 or 206 diesel, Renault Clio or whatever floats her boat really, after all, she's the one that will have to drive it!
if you have kids you will need a car that as an ncap safety rating of at least 3 so i would recommend a corsa or a clio both are cheap to buy and run
How does an r reg 3 door Vauxhall Astra sound , plenty of mot and a bit of tax as well , it's blue with just short of 120k on the clock , runs very well , recent cam belt and water pump , used daily , big enough for the kids and the shopping , small enough for easy parking , very reliable very economical 1.4 so cheap insurance and tax I'm looking for about £1200 let me know if you're interested
