What does an orange rectangle on a lorry mean?

I have noticed on UK roads that some articulated lorries and vans have an orange rectangle, usually on the bumper, at the front or back.

Does anyone know what this signifies?

Answers:
Its a hazards materials warning plate if its just plain orange it means low grade hazardous materials carried.

But if it has numbers and letters on it like below it is telling the emergengy services what it is carrying and what precautions to take and what to use to put out a fire and a phone number of the company for specialist advice.

2YE 1203
01234 5678910

2Y means use foam if on fire
E means evacuate the area if vehicle is involved in a crash
1203 is the international ID code for the hazardous material carried (1203 is petrol/gasoline)
01234 5678910 is the phone number for specialist advice

Hope this helps
means they like oranges of funny shapes
they're reflector tape, which means at night you could still see them. it also may not be reflector tape, but still used for the same reason, for you not to smash them!
reflector tapes to enable other road users to see them
its a reflector used at night when parked up -- the light from your car headlights shows up some distance away on the vehicle and its just to make you aware of it thats all.
They are plates for putting details of the hazardous chemicals that they are carrying. Blank Plates Orange plate without any numbers indicates vehicle carrying dangerous load (drums, packages, etc.) or multi-load tanker.

These plates tell the fire brigade how to deal with a crash/spill.

don't go near a crashed lorry if it has these plates on!

See http://www.the-ncec.com/hazchem/.
there a hazard or look out sign. just to let motorist to take extra care.
cars are also meant to have them in there boots to be used if the car brake's down
usually means carrying a hazardous load ,blank plate can mean gas bottles etc, some orange plates have the cargo name on then, and a phone number for the fire service to phone if theres a spillage
