City cars?

A lot of people seem to be very worried about drivers of 4X4's in cities, especially London. I don't understand why it is always the anti 4X4 wallies who are the most vociferous, as they are no worse than any other car, but I had to drive to London last week (in a hired Focus - awfully small and claustrophobic) and found no problem parking near Petticoat Lane. Mind you, the £10 a day was rather steep! Any way my point is why do city workers or dwellers drive into the city at all? Why not use public transport? Plenty of buses, trains etc. They should try living in the sticks. If you are lucky 1 bus a day, no trains or tube. City people are basically spoilt softies who just like to complain. Should city centres be completely traffic free?

Answers:
yes city centre should be car free. i use public transport all the time, but the buses take an age to get through the city centre because there are to many cars in the lanes not just bus lanes.also when you cross the road at the green man as their driving to fast the sometimes only just stop . i have been nearly knocked down by cars when crossing at the green man. AND THE DRIVERS GIVE ME VERBAL ABUSE!!. but there does need to be an improvent on the public transport so car drivers stop driving in city centre centres. i think that car drivers get lazy and think that they can not live without their cars. people in with moblies in hospitals are the same when asked to switch them off. you think that your asking them to rip their hearts out.
Yeah, they should. There's enough people around that they don't need cars to make traffic bad. If you're in a city, use mass transit.
Do what the other selfish gits do,park in my local supermarket
and bus it a short distance to city centre
Can't see it happening. I go into the Big Smoke by Train, and by Car sometimes. Agree there are lots of options, but frankly ALL of them are overcrowded, congested, expensive etc. I think city dwellers still use their cars as the easiest option considering the alternatives are not much cheaper/quicker.

The root of this is across the board congestion, and government using taxes and franchises to make money from transport rather than investing in it. You can't make one mode of transport "traffic free" without improving capacity elsewhere, not that that seems to matter to ministers.

So, nice ideal, but impossible.
