Personalised Car Number Plates - whats the crack ?

I've got a (really) good friend who buys personalised number plates and tells me this one is worth 1000 quid, this one s worth blah blah blah.

Whats it all about? Have some people got loads more free time than me?

A philanthropist has a love of mankind, often someone who is a very generous benefactor, eg JP Getty - a person who collects stamps is a Philatelist.
As for personalised plates - they are tacky. But some people want them.
