On average, how many commercial passenger aircraft are in the air at any given time?

I can't find this out anywhere, but someone must know. Please note: I don't appreciate "I don't know" answers. Thanks in advance for any help you might be able to provide!

go to this link - it doesnt answer it completely but its on the right track. You have to buy the rest of the article from New Scientist to get the formula to figure it out.. good luck with that!..
Too many.
Multiply the total number of aircraft by the fraction of time which the average aircraft spends in the air.
Tens of thousands in the US alone - a place to find that info is www.faa.gov - click on air traffic control - they have a lot of statistics that you're looking for.
