If the numbers on a car mileometer are crooked ( out of line) has it been messed with?

Im looking at a car on ebay - and the the numbers on the mileometer look crooked - not all straight together - does this mean its been fixed to look like its done less? Should they be straight - i'm sure I've heard somewhere that they should be.

You should get the VIN number and check it at carfax.com

What you're talking about is possible odometer tampering.it happened to my last vehicle before I bought it and I didnt know till I was trying to trade it in for a new car.

The carfax report will tell you if any suspicious activity has gone on.mine said 'possible odometer tampering of up to 12,000 miles'. The report will also give you information on accidents that have happened to the car, which is good to know (since you wouldnt want a car to have any, or at least too many accidents).

On the ebay site it should have the VIN, or you could email the seller yourself and get the information from him/her.

SAVE THE EMAIL!

When you run the carfax report you should be able to decide if you want the car. BUT if you get the car, bring that email with you when you go to pick it up or it gets delivered. Check and make sure the car that you're getting has the same VIN, and that the seller didnt give you a phony VIN to try to get a good carfax report and get you to buy the car. If you keep the email you can check, plus you'll have 'evidence' if you need to get your money back and the seller wont return it.
Not necessarily, check all the MOT certificates.
You can usually see if a car has done many miles- excessive wear on cluch pedal, gear stick and steering wheel. what car is it?
not always, but usually.
generally that is a good indication that the mileage has been tampered with . you can in some cases verify mileage via the dvla .
if it a modern car then they should be aligned precisely, but some older cars can be a little off
It depends on the mileage and age,, an older car could be of the genuine mileage and the milometer is just a little worn, if it's a newer car then the chances are it has been clocked.
If it has a service history or the old mot slips you can verify the mileage with those.
Especially in older cars once they turn over once (100,000) the numbers are hardly ever evenly ligned up w/ each other. This does not necessarily mean it has been tampered with.
if your worried about it , i wouldn't touch it at all
if it is a car built after 1990, you can take it to a repair shop and they can scan the computer and tell you the mileage on the on board computer
Yes
Am an ex car dealer, and is seem to me is been clocks back to a lower miles for more value of the vehicle u get more info go to autowebsearch.co.uk and look for Help and Advise you get loads of info there.
its been done by an amateur if they are crooked, but quite often just before and a bit after a car has gone around each 10.000 mark the numbers will not line up exactly
yes although it should read in a straight line, it may have been tampered with so depends really what the mileage says and also if it is just the little one that is crooked and not the big one, it should be fine once you press the reset button.
Again depending on the car itself and the age, you can look at the pedals steering wheel and also trim/seats for unusual wear and tear if the car says it has only done a few thousand miles and these look well worn then highly probably has been tampered with!
e-bay is a great way to get a bargain but it's also an excellent way for a scammer to move a banger! Good luck and i hopw this helps you.
If it is a car you really love and is a real bargain, try doing a background check on it with AA etc to see if it has been stolen or HPI on it and can tell you mileage from previous MOT's (tese will also tell you if it has suddenly lost miles so ask if you can see them all)
Good Luck!
if the first few numbers r out of line yes its been clocked the last two sumtimes out of line wen ready to click over to next number
