any diesel will do if you can put up with the smell.
Ford Escort was my first car Y reg in the 80's it was 1.6 GL and 4 doors it was cheap to run and insurance not to bad however, i would suggest a Rover 200 Diesel you can buy one for under £1000 and should be very good on fuel.
one that runs.
I guess you also need a low insurance group.

It depends on your budget, but a Citroen C2 (petrol or diesel) is good, and the new C1 which is the same as a Toyota Aygo and the Peugeot 107 is also good - it averaged around 60mpg in this week's Autocar test (check the website).

However, these are actually more expensive than the C2 when new, which seems strange.

Alternatively, you might consider one of the outgoing Corsas, or the outgoing Punto.

If you want to spend less, consider an earlier Punto (but not the original shape), or an earlier Clio. Always buy as young a car as you can afford. Old low-mileage cars (even if the mileage is genuine) can be a load of trouble.

I hope this helps.
Kancil made in Malaysia. It should be darn cheap car. But if you just need to get you from point A to B, it's gd choice.
What a question ???????
Try getting hold of a good second hand Renault Clio, cheap to run good mpg and low insurance.
best reliable cheap cars will be honda, toyota, nissan.dont worry about looks try and find an oldish one with low mileage, just used for trips to church on sundays etc.
nissan micra
Try a Diesel Peugot 309 or a Citroen ZX (same car underneath but cheaper to buy)
Or even a 106 XND 1.4.
I would go with a Diesel citroen zx as they are cheep as chips to buy and quite good engines.
I would concentrate your seach on a Ford Fiesta or Vauxhall Corsa.

- They are cheap to insure and parts are inexpensive.

Go to www.desperateseller.co.uk and www.autotrader.co.uk

Set the filters to:

seller : "private and trade"
search : "national"
min : " ? "
max : " ? "
miles : "up to 40000"
age : "up to 10 years old"
sort results by : "price low to high"

Even within these tight parameters, there are Fiestas and Corsas to choose from.

Good luck.
