Fiat stilo - Is it a good second hand car?

We are buying a second hand car. Our budget is £4500-5000. Since we want to buy only from authorised dealers, honda/VW/Ford are out of question. This is out 1st car, so insurance is high. Dont want to spend a lot. We will use it for city driving and will not be going long drives very often.

We are getting a 2003 fiat stilo for £4700. It has done 33000 miles and is quite good. It is 1.8, 16V 5door, manual - petrol

The service history etc is all in place.

Has anyone got any inputs or any other options we can look at?

if i were you i'd look at the skoda range.they have come leaps and bounds since V W took them over.
They can be very unreliable with problems with electrics, parts are servicing are amoung the most expensive!

I would go for an Astra or a Ford Focus, 1st choice would be a VW Golf but they are usually higher priced

I am not sure why you want to go to dealers like you mentioned as they usually buy their cars from Auctions or from P/X'es from people they have rippped off.

I would scan the Autotrader for yoru price range and anything that you by from a reputable place at the price you mentiooned would be good
Fist name ..fiat,, second name forget it .
Why not get a (slightly older) VW Golf, or even a Vauxhall Astra for the same money? Better built, better dealer network, stronger residuals (In the case of the Golf at least)?
Having been a previous Stilo owner, thankfully no longer, I would have to say this was the worst car I ever knew of, ours may have been a 1 off but the service we received from Fiat was also terrible. Our car went into the dealers 12 times in as many months, 3 times in 1 week for a problem they couldn't resolve, which eventually was found to be a faulty computer part! When we wrote to Fiat complaining about this car we were never answered and our telephone calls went without response also.
We were also advised that Stilo's do not hold any value so I would seriously look before you buy one of these. Finally if you, like me, are female & under 5ft10 tall you will be garotted by the seatbelt which sits securely accross your throat whilst driving, in the unlucky event of an accident.
it has been one of fiats failures re guarding sales and costumer feed back build quality electrical bits like failing windows etc.plus UK dealership back up is poor.true its roomy and a lot of car for the money but if i was you i,d look at a ford focus vauxhall astra skoda octavia toyota coralla nissan almera madza 323 plus a smart for four are all better cars then the fiats offering.fiat are replacing the car soon due to its reputation it has been a loss to the company.look around a bit try different cars before committing your self to a car.if you do decide to have the fiat have an hpi check done to insure the cars history is ok plus get an aa or rac sheck done on it to make sure its fault free.
forget fiat they are not reliable new never mind used
any reason you are buying from the dealer? they do not always have the best stock or aftersales.
the stilo is a nice enough car but will be worth about half the asking price once you have driven away in it.
5000 pounds put you into an older focus, fiesta, astra, civic, corolla, why not get a 1400 engine if your not planning on doing a lot of distance and save on the insurance.
not a fiat, reliability is poor, try to look at the market of used cars, there is still a lot of options, buy an autotrader magazine and you will find loads, at the end of it no matter what car you choose, look at the history, check the basic things, like oil leaks in the engine, electricals ie: windows, lights, wipers and do go for a test drive if they wud allow so you can have a feel of the car, it is always exciting to get the first car but do make your decisions well, coz somtyms the problems shows a few days after you got the car, if you cud get a lower mileage thats even better, 33000 miles means you have still 3000 miles to go before you have the 36000 mile check, come to think of it you'll be paying another fee for it to be check, good luck and all the best
