Should the Road tax in UK be charged in a similar way to Ireland, based upon the cc of the vehicle?

The bigger the car, the more the Road Tax?

Answers:
So how do you work that out to be fair then?

Isn't road tax supposed to be about paying for 'roads'?

Isn't the money supposedly towards the road network, it's up keep, rairing all those pot holes, the improvements to networks, etc, etc?

So, why because my car has a bigger engine than yours should it cost me more?
If it's about damage to the surface then shouldn't it be vehicles with wider tyres equals paying more? Weight of vehicle paying more?

We shouldn't be confusing road tax with looking after the enviroment, the amount of discounts given to cars like the Prius are ridiculous. That car does much more damage to the enviroment than most family petrol cars and anyone interested in motoring knows this.

How many times have you seen council buses spewing out clouds of black smoke while only carrying one old women to the shops? And i don't see Blair, Prescott and even Cameron in enviromentally friendly vehicles, Cameron only does his bike run only when the cameras are on him.

The only fair way to tax use of roads is those who use it more should pay more and the easiest way about that is tax on fuel which we have already to a massive amount in the UK.

We have thousands of vehicles on UK roads which have NO tax through people not paying or the vehicle is registered abroad, fuel tax is the only way to catch them.

But let's not fool ourselves here for one second, it's ALL about making money for the government to be used on other things, little of it ends up being spent on anything to do with roads.
It already is to some extent
It is charged on the CO2 emissions.
Should be put on petrol along with 3 party insurance.
It is!
No, it should be added to Petrol. the more you drive the more you pay.

Most people seem to want that with thier phones, electric, gas, water, food.so why not car tax
Behind the times
Already is £40 a year for small cc car.
then go`s up in steps
It was until 2001. It's now based on C02 emissions so that you are taxed according to how much damage your vehicle does to the environment.
it already is
it pretty much is already, but would anyone else like to pay it on a monthly direct debit, like the tv licence? or am i just mad?
Why? Dont believe all that crap about bigger engined cars polluting more. Its just a way of getting more money off people.
I think road tax should be calculated into fuel price so everyone who drive and use our roads will have to pay road tax that way.I think it is more fair.Lots of foreign visitors, lorries etc use our roads for free and only UK registered car owners have to pay.
it already is in away because it is done on the cars emmisions the bigger the engine the more road tax you pay.thay used to do it by the engine size
It already is and also included is the emmissions from the cars exhaust
It is. And takes into the account as well the CO2 immissions I think.
