also unable to keep revs steady when riding clutch the car has done 85k

Answers:
Hey there,
I presume that you mean under 2,000 revs.
If the 1.4 and the 1.8 ecotec are similar then it could be a number if things.
There are a number of tubes, sensors etc involved in the idle control. And of cource the ECU.
As far as I know one the ecotec is setup to restrict fuel flow at lower revs to increase economy. Which it does very well (I used to have a K reg 1.8i cavalier and now have a P reg 1.8 ecotec vectra)
Does the car idle correctly ?
The throttle body can need cleaning if the car is used for short journeys.
It could also be the clutch, has it been changed or adjusted recently ?

Good luck !
Mass air flow meter fault could just be the connection clean with switch cleaner.Have you ever had the eng management light on its the one that looks like an eng block with a flash of lightning in the centre. If so your ECU will have recorded a fault code also the cam sensor can give the symptoms discribed,Regards Mick
in what way poor performance? slow to rev? uneven idle? need more info. no mass air flow meter on this model. good guess though also can`t adjust clutch - hydraulic.
