I'm thinking of buying a VW Polo 1.9TD?

My logic is that its small and good for city driving. Its German therefore well built. That a big diesel engine in a small car will give good economy and power. Anyone had one/drove one who can recommend it or slate it?

Good luck vid your excelent choice of car. Adolf Elizabeth Hitler.
Very reliable, very torquey engine and very economical. Watch out for rust on the rear wheel arches and on the seam on the door sills. Not the coolest car but well made and will last for ever
good car cheap to run and maintain abit bland but ok.check for rust on rear arches also check the turbo works ok can be expensive to replace.check the clutch for wear to see if it has had a hard life.pull oil cap off to check for white slugh to make sure the water has not mixed with the oil to check the condition of the head gasket.they also suffer from warped heads as they are made from alloy.also check for excessive black smoke.check it has a full service history and passed mots for mileage records.also check depending on mileage when the cam belt was changed.heck for play in the steering check to make sure there is no play in the steering check condition of front tyres to see that the tracking is ok plus check for tread as being front wheel drive they eat front tyres as the diesal is more nose heavy then the petrol version.also check brakes to make sure that the discs are not warpped.check all the electrics like windows sunroof etc to make sure they all work.if it has air con make sure it works and that it does not need regassing.check for crash damage un matched paint panel gap.if you like the car you could have an hpi check done for its history to make sure that it is not being written off or on finance it cost about 40 pound worth it for your own peace of mind.good luck with the car
1.9TD is perfect for city. This diesel engine is quite economical. But it's not really that powerful. I'd go for GTI version: http://www.uberauto.com/news/volkswagen/.
Not keen on big diesel engines in small cars. You can achieve very good fuel economy in a smaller car with 1.4 cc (or less) petrol engine.

1.9 diesel equates usually to 1.4 petrol in terms of power in modern engines. Your insurance is also likely to be cheaper with smaller cc engine.

In my experience petrol cars make much better city cars where diesels are long geared for motorway and longer commutes and come into their own in this situation. Petrol cars are much more geared to be nippy round town.

Remember also diesels engines are heavy - hard on tyres and have shorter service intervals.

As for the Polo you cant go far wrong there but I would consider a petrol more suitable for your requirments.
