It really depends on your budget.
We have a VW Sharan 1.9 tdi, it has been very very reliable and has not had much money spent on it.
You can get a 1.9 tdi for between £3-5k dependant on condition and mileage.
Ours does 40-45 round the toen and 45-50 on steady motorway journeys.
I'd say the Toyoto Corrollo Verso - it has a great design too, and Toyota are very realiable - they have great service too..

i would say a Vauxhall Zafira, smart car, not to big but plenty of room inside, very good on fuel, parts cost around average to any other normal car, the same with a service!
