Which is the best caravan to tow?
Answers:
Think it depends on how big you want, and what you intends on towing with. If you want to go over about 3.5m-4m in length then I would suggest a twin axle as it will ride better, and you will have a less bumpy ride from the caravan. But if you are going to go that large, and have atwin axle, I would recommend a decent sized 4x4 to tow with, as you will find that most large cars although they may have the legal ability to tow such a caravan, are not geared for it, and you will end up struggling on hill starts and the likes. Also a 4x4 weighs more so you will have a steadier ride, and reduce the risk or snaking, whereas a car may weigh less than the caravan you are towing, which is when it can get a bit scary. Having towed upto 3.5t behind a 4x4 I know that it can get unpleasant having more weight on the tow ball, than the vehicle towing it.
Assuming equal size;
Twin axle caravans are better to tow in a striaght line.
Single axle caravans are easier to maneouvre.
Neither, get a bed and breakfast.
You need to check the weight your car will tow in your car's manual. Every caravan has a "maximum permissible fully laden weight" badge on it. Some of the lighter vans might be 900 kgs where as some of the larger twin axles might be 1800+ kgs. You are legally allowed to tow a fully laden caravan that's a radio of 1:1 to your car although the Caravan Club recommend that your caravan is 80% the weight of your car to tow safely. You can get prosecuted for towing over the weight allowed. The laws are nothing to do with the ability to pull the van, but the stopping distances.
Another thing to consider with twin axles, they're bloody difficult to manoever by hand! They won't pivot on the spot like a single axle will.
