VW mk1 clipper. wheel dimensions for 17" alloys to fit?

Answers:
I have VW mark 1 jetta and the biggest wheels i could get on was 16 in 195 45's.Depends how low the car is mine is very low and the tyres do catch the inside arch covers when cornering hard.Any bigger than 195 and you going to have problems at full lock unless you put spacers on then problems start with catching wing arches.
I don't think they will, you need to roll the arches or you will get rubbing when turning th efront wheels, even if you go for a low profile tyre, like 40.
Try www. wolfracewheels.com they have a chart for wheel fitment. Or www.r-tec.com very good wheel guide on there too.
maybe a 7by17 with a 205/40/17 tyre or for a wider look 7.5by17 with a 225/40/17 both fit most common makes and models.
dont know if this helps but i fitted 205 40 17s straight on my mk2 no rubbing at all
