I have a 1998 VW Polo 1.4CL and my central locking will only work when the engine is on or has just been on!?

Perhaps you need to calibrate it, If the remote has been pressed too many times out of range or the car has sood for a while the sync of the remote goes out. check your hand book for the correct prrocedure. I have a Audi A4 and I have to lock the car with the key, then take out the key and press the remote. Some cars are different, so check your book and your problem hopefully will be sorted out. I would have said definitley the battery, its sounds like the battery doesnt have enough charge for the central locking without the engine running, have a check done on the battery, even tho its new, a garage can do a check to see that its being charged up properly
You say youve just got a new battery, for the car or the fob ?
