Why do i loose power when climbing gradients?

i have a vauxhall cavalier 1.7 td on a m plate

Answers:
it sounds as if the turbo is not doing as it should - it may be knackered or it may not be kicking in - the waste gate may not be closing therefore not building up the pressure as it should giving you the power you need - it needs to go to a garage to be diagnosed properly -
Gravity?!?!?!?
Tired turbo Tired engine maybe the turbo's not even working
poor engine compresion?
Are you sure you aren't just loosing speed.
All engines have to be worked properly using the various gears to get the best from them, whether we are climbing a gradient or not. Using the correct gear will ensure that you can maintain the correct speed. Unless of course your engine has a mechanical fault, in which case you should visit a reputable garage for repairs.
It could be that your pump timing is out.
Gravity, the car has to work harder to combat it - put your foot down!
You don't. You have the same amount of power, you are just asking your car to do more work for the same power.

Example: your car needs 60% of it's possible power to go 100mph on the flat.
If you then go uphill, you are adding gravity as a force, so you need extra power to maintain 100mph uphill.

You floor it and you still slow down, it's because you are asking your car to do mopre work than it is capable of.

Power=work done divided by time taken
one reason for this is weight have you ever tried walking up hill with a heavy back pack on? another reason could be injectors are blocked and need cleaning you,ll have to gear down!
it could well be the water separator (for want of a better word)
i had exactly the same problem ,on my 2.5 tdi ,
and changing down up hill didnt make things any better ,
i changed the filter , and it was as good as gold ,
if the filter/seperator has done its job ,change it ,a few pounds
if the engine keeps reving the same but you are slowing down its the clutch, i had a fiat uno which did the same especially when i had passangers. to find out if it is the clutch when you are going on the flat try booting the accelerator if the engine revs high but the car dont go mu8ch quick suddenly then its the clutch. best place to go for a new one is Mr clutch, garanteed for 3 years and they do checks on it every 1000 miles or so for free to make sure its adjusted.
Run for a mile on a flat surface then run up a hill!
Think about it!
Feel the difference?, well so does your car!
I had one of these cars and just a few questions 1.Do you service the car regulary 2.Do always check the level of your oil daily 3.If you are a boy racer it should climb the hill no problem, but if you onlr drive at 25-30 mph then it will have a problem.
Let me explain the car i had was bought off a retired gentlman and he never went over the speed limit so when i obtained the car it would not go fast so i had a complete service and took it on the motorway for several hours building up the speed and this worked a treat.
