I have put a small amount of brake fluid in th coolant reservoir in my car. What problems can this cause?
Answers:
if it was not alot dont worry about it there will be no damage the heat of the engine will break it down and it will dissolve break fluid is not made to withstand that much heat it wont hurt your hoses or anything like that you can flush it if you want but dont need to
i would drain the reservoir its easy enough to take out and dump. or use a turkey baster.

you better off flushing it if you havent in a couple years.
mmm, not a lot.
what worries me more is the fact that you dont know the difference between a radiator pressure bottle and your brake master fluid resovior.
brake fluid is oil at the end of the day, itll sit ontop of the water, it may get scummy, so just drain the rad (drain plug on the bottom) refil lit, and pay attention, or buy a haynes joke book.
Probably nothing. Don't get it on the paint, it will damage that. And given time it will be dissipated by the heat from the engine.
If the car hasn't been run, take the hose off the radiator and allow it to run out on the ground. Then refill the resevior with proper coolant..
Not very many if it is a small amount and the system has fluid in it.
Brake fluid is hygroscopic, and as such, very easily diluted. If the amount was large enough, or the system empty, it will degrade the rubber hoses, causing them to swell and become very weak.
your engine will blow, and the coolant will turn into a pasta like solid, because of the chemical reaction between the brake fluid and coolant, when it is heated by the heat from the engine. completely flush out the resirvoar and the supply pipes, and wash it with an ammonia solution, and then refill it with coolant, to avoid any damage.
really a small amount probably won't hurt.but I have to agree with the other guy..if you don't know the difference between the coolant reservoir and the brake reservoir then you should have someone else do these things for you.
If you didnt put too much in it, it wont do it any harm. Brake fluid, allthough oil based will eventually mix with water. I think the term used is that it is 'hydroscopic'. IE, it will mix with water. This is one of the reasons why you should not use a tin of fluid that has been opened and has lain in your shed for years as it absorbs moisture naturally.
if it is only a small amount, there will be no problems
it may be bether if you change it.word of an profecional, belive me.
I'm no mechanic but if you overfill the resevior with water, the brake fluid will float to the top and spill out where it can be mopped up with kitchen roll. When water begins to spill out then all the brake fluid has gone, simply drain the water back down to required level.
Not a perfect answer but an easy DIY one, surely.
