Can you get a road tax refund without the disc if you are the registered owner and the car is a right off?

we were told to take the disc off the car by the insurance company and forgot ,it is now with a salvage compamy but we are stil the registered owners

Answers:
No you have to produce the old disc. Ask for it at the salvage yard. x
No you need the actual disc to claim a refund.
if the car was a right off, you can defo get a refund
If you can prove it's scrapped you can get a form from the post ofice and get your money back
No, you have to return the actual disc. The people who now have the car will probably send it back, but remember, if you no longer have the car you MUST report it to the DVLA, otherwise it will be assumed you still have it and it is on the road, so when the tax next becomes due you will have to pay, they will send you the bill. It is illegal to have got rid of the car, no matter who to, even if it has gone for scrap, without informing the DVLA
absolutely, this happened to my girlfriends daughter a couple of months ago. The car was a write off and some oaf in the salvage yard stole the tax disc from it.

Of course you can claim a refund even if you haven't got the disc! just think about it. They will only refund complete, unused months though. And it takes ages for the money to come .

Yes you can. Definitely. I am disappointed with some of these other answers and it just shows you one of the problems of Yahoo answers- ignorant people who THINK they know what they are talking about.
I think you have to return the disc, so assuming someone hasn't already stolen it you could try the salvage yard. Otherwise contact DVLA and ask them what the situation is. You have to notify them anyway that the car is a write-off and return the log-book to them.
Def NO
yes . get a form from post office
or contact your local dvla
Hi, this only applies in Ireland.
You must first be 3 months ahead of time with tax. You need to send in a scrappage form stamped by the scrappage dealer to say the car will no longer be on the road.
You ll send with it a tax refund form and the log book of the car into the tax office. Put a phone number on the form so they can inform you straight away. The forms are available at corkcoco.ie I hope this helps!
I forgot to take mine off and called the salvage company who posted it back to me.wot nice people.

I just sent it back to DVLA who then sent me a cheque back.
My car was stolen and burnt out and i received a refund on tax disc, I got a form from a local dvla office i think. Ask the post office or check in yellow pages for number to ring for form. It can be done and they only refund full months only. It happened a years ago for me and can't remember all details but it can be done!!
