Golf GL 1.8 Auto 1996. Am having starting problems on damp mornings. Recently serviced. Any advice?

Answers:
If it has a distributor, take the cap off when cool and see if any moisture is present. If so, replace cap and gasket at the base of the cap.
Scrap it.
if it is only when damp try spraying distibutor cap & h.t.leads with wd40 or similar damp start product
WD40 it - clears the moisture up of any shorts but you may need to change all the high voltage wires - ones to the spark plugs - hope that is of some help Wd40 - get it any car accessories shop
I agree with Lawrence, it sounds like a cracked distributor cap or bad base gasket, get up early and check to see if any moisture is present in the cap, or if there is any damage to the seal.
i agree with the others about checking the distributor cap first, but also check the ignition coil, they are really prone to failing, you can often see the crack on the outside of it, they are only about £30 from euro car parts
normaly ether dissy cap leads or plugs
dissy cap take off and clean
leads replace
plugs replace
if it has a auto choke it may not be kicking in when you need it.
I had this problem too, and I agree with some of the other peoples suggestions of taking the distributor cap off and spraying it with WD40. This used to work for a few weeks on my car. The only other thing I can think of that has also happened to me, but might just be a quirk with my car, was when the garage serviced it and did the oil change, they replaced the oil with fairly cheap stuff. I usually put a sports/high performance oil in mine just so that the mechanical parts don't rub together in the cold, so if it is a persistent problem you could try changing the oil again to a top quality oil (if they haven't done that for you).

One last thing I used to do with my old car, which used to give it a bit of a helping hand, is to fill it up with leaded petrol every now and then. Even though it was an unleaded engine, if you do it occasionally it seems to run a lot better. Not sure that this would work for every car though, as mine was a very basic small engined car, and I'm not sure you can even buy leaded petrol any more?! Good luck
