Ideas for 1st sportscar?

I have been driving a 1.2 litre piece of crap for the last 3 years I want something faster.
I can not afford a lot (over £5k is too much) and I do not want to buy on credit.
Insurance isn't much of a problem so what should I get?

I prefer japanese cars and don't want something common.

I was thinking of an FTO or Impreza but anybody got better ideas?

if you want a sports car there are a few you could go with. most common would have to be a mitsubishi eclipse but only get the turbo versions like the gsx or spyder convertable. they have a 2.0 litre 4cyl dohc with a bit of power. another is an acura rsx which also has modification that can be easily done to it. Celicas are nice but only the older ones. if you want one of them go for the turbo version of them if you can find it. its got a 2.2 litre 4cyl and they have awd in most of them. most of these so far cost between 3-7 grand depending on how good a deal you find. if your looking for a more expensive more rare car there is one 4 you could get. lowest end stock would have to be a rx7. they have room for modification and have great potential. next up would be the 300zx. they are rare but affordable and come in a coupe or 2+2 version. the coupe i would go with has between 250-300 horses stock. they don't have much as far as luxery goes but like the rx7 have plenty of room to modify. next is my own and personal favorite the 3000gt. mine is a vr4 which is the twin turbo version and comes stock with 320 horses. it has plenty of luxery items and is very fun to drive. you get the most for your money stock out of this car. its the same as the gto someone mentioned before but the gto is the japanese version and is right hand drive and costs quite a bit more as it has to be imported. the last is the supra. its got around the same horsepower stock as the vr4 but thats only the base model. the twin turbo versions of that can range in 350 to 400 horsepower stock depending on the options the origional owner purchased. its got and inline 6 and can push up to around 1200 horsepower with the right modification done. these last 4 cars can range you from 5-20 grand or more again depending on your deal. goodluck
try an mx5 or a 200sx
2nd or 3rd generation Mazda Rx-7. Can't go wrong with that.
Money not an issue and aston martin db9 but on your budget you could buy an old merc sl- they are pretty cool xx
toyota celica
If you are any good at repair and restoration I would suggest you buy the best second hand car you like and can afford, then restore it yourself as cash comes available. That way you get what you want, spread over a period of time.
The FTO is nice enough, the Impreza (for less than 5k) will have been thrashed to within an inch of its life. Really, if you owned one you would drive it like you stole it. Otherwise, you might be able to pick up a 300ZX though they have often been chipped. If you are looking at Japanese, try a Nissan Fairlady - yeah, cr*p name but fairly uncommon. Or a Mitsubishi GTO, but for 5k, again you may not get anything any good. I am not sure but a Supra might be close to your price range (it's the one I would go for).
93-95 ford probe is the way to go the gt has a 2.5L v6 thats got plenty of power and speed.
Mazda MX5, 2 seater sports car, old 1.6i will be in your price range.
It is one of the best roadsters I have ever driven, the Honda S200 was superior but more expensive.

I would recommend that you didn't go for a used Scooby as going from a 1.2 to a rally car for the road is a bit mad. A bit more info on if you need 4 door, 4-5 seats etc would help people answer this.
celicas suck

Honda Integra

mazda Rx-7
old caterham super 7 is like a go cart, cheap 2nd hand too
I bought a Pontiac Firebird (the Trans-Am is similar) and am well pleased (particualry with the ladies) - they are very expensive on fuel though.
It is rather noisy
Go test drive the MR2 Turbo....
