Its the cabin where everyone wants to be, the popular cabin. All the cool kids like coach. There are only a few people who like to fly first class, that's why there's only a few first class seats. The rest of us party in coach. There is even a lovely grey curtain that gets pulled to keep those first class passengers out of our air space. Coach rules! :-)

I believe it is so-named because of the cheap ticket prices and how cramped the quarters are in early commercial aviation (esp. during the beginning of the jet era up till the Boeing 767). People must have likened themselves to being herded around like cattle then, hence cattle class.
No worries for present day economy travel though, most airlines have larger seat pitches and a fair bit of room for you to stretch your legs. If need be, you may want to walk around when the aircraft is cruising.
