get someone to read the fault codes, if the light comes on then the fault should be logged in the memory. You dont say how old the car is but if it idles perfectly but just wont rev, and if u turn it off and restart it cures itself then it sounds like a faulty throttle sensor, your car prob hasnt got a throttle cable, its done electronically, so if the ecu picks up any wrong signal from this it immediately returns to idle as a safety precaution. The fault codes will confirm this.
