What does the blue / white sign with the letters "TIR" on the back of lorries mean?

I see this quite a bit when travelling and always wanted to know what it is..

Answers:
"In the field of international road transport, TIR is an abbreviation for Transport International Routier, a longstanding system for facilitating international trade by enabling commercial vehicles to undergo Customs importation formalities at their destination instead of at borders. "
Trans International Roadways.
I can't remember exactly what TIR stands for, but it's French for something about transport. Basically it means the trailer and goods inside where checked and sealed by customs in the country the journey started in. It means the trailer doesn't have to be rechecked at each border it crosses on the way to it's destination.
Transportes International Routiers.
In english? International transport.
Trade International Routier, it means that they follow recognised trade routes throughout the world, at least thats what they taught us in commerce at school, this was 18 years ago but it cant have changed. This is one of only two things I remember from school, the other being the names of 5 types of spawning salmon!
I've always wondered that myself. I do know Tir is Gealic for Land, but I very much doubt if there's any connection.
