What is a good first car for a 17 year old?
Answers:
She's probably not going to keep her first car long anyway, so she could go for absolutely anything she liked.
With £1000 you could buy an ex-rep car from the local car auction; it would have high miles (very high) but it would have been maintained every 6mths under fleet contract.
Passat, Vectra, Astra, Golf, etc.
If she's more inclined to keep it for 2-3 years, then go for one of the deals from Arnold Clark or the like. £99 deposit and £whatever per month for 3 years. At the end of the 3 years she can trade it in and keep making her payments on her new car.
Or. She could splash out on something a little bit older but with more style, like an older Celica or MR2 (never get insurance though).
Or.. The best idea is to go for something like a Golf Driver, Saxo, Corsa. Cheap, light, good of fuel and easy to insure.
John.
citroen saxo
peugeot 205
Ford Escort or Mercury Tracer.
An older one.
A pedal one !
Something slow, easy to maintain, and cheap to insure.
Sounds awful but something like a Lada, she won't be able to go too fast. Anybody can work on them, and they are quite good for insurance: I know as one was my first car.
Downside is people will have a go at her, but she will be able to afford it, and she will be safe (they are solid)
Ford KA, definitely Ford KA but with a grand, I'm not sure. She could however get a Nissan Sunny 1.0 or 1.1 with a good reg with that amount. all the best. but remember to ask her to give me a lift when she gets one lol!
seriously.. her first car should be something cheap and expendable.. she is no gonna be a A1 driver immediately so she might get bumps and scratches now and then. why get a good car just for it to be spoilt?? wait till she gains some experience driving. ( like a year or two) then invest in a better car.. trust me. it really is the best idea.
ford tempo topaz trcer escort chevy cavileir sunfire geo prizm chevy lumina plymoth sundance dodge sperit ford contour buick centry buick ceria olds deta 88 nisson sentra honda accord civic pontiac sunbird
renault megane or citroen saxo
Go for the cheaper Toyota first. 1995 -1998 models. New drivers always make dents on whatever they are driving. You can trade it or buy a better model after a year of driving.
A mini , its great for parking and cheap on spares their iconic and you get some respect from other drivers.
From personal experience and from watching friends and their children, the perfect first car would have to be something like a Vauxhall corsa. They are Very low insurance, cheap for parts so even if they do get a small dent or loose a wing mirror it wont cost an arm and a leg to replace, they are great on fuel especially the little 1.1 L or merits. Or alternatively a little fiesta or escort. The Vauxhalls are more reliable but there isn't a major difference in them. TO buy i would suggest going to a local auction or just looking through a local free ads paper but do try to go for lower mileage and always get as much history as you can.
Hope this helps
With only a grand to deal with I would recommend trying your luck on Ebay Motors. Look at late 80s to early 90s Honda Civics, Nissan Altima, and Toyota Corolla. Any of these would be a good "first" car (my preference would be the Civic). And if by chance you find an elderly person selling one that fits your price range grab that puppy quick, they are the best at keeping receipts and maintenance records, as well the car usually has low mileage.
the ford fiesta slagging off is 17 year olds who thrash cars and then say they are crap when the car blows up.
try a ford ka, nissan micra, fiat punto, vauxhall corsa (avoid 3 cylinder).
the kids round these parts always manage to destroy saxo's,106's, clio's as they havent got the hang of slowing down for curves in the roads yet.
all the cars so far mentioned would probably cost over a grand or the insurance would cripple you you poor dear
how about a nissan micra you could probably get a p or r reg for that amount in good nick and cheap to run low insurance etc an ideal 1st car for a young girl
happy hunting
Do not buy a French Car..Look good built like Cr*p
I would recommend an old Corsa
Nissan Micra
Pedal car
I still have my first car and it's blooming great! I have an N reg Clio and have never had any problems with it. It cost me £1300.
I expect she wants to look coll but as others have said she'll probably have a few bumps and bangs in it, personally I think she's a lucky girl to have parents that are willing to buy a car, mine never did!
