get the aa to check it over or a valid garage if u don't know owt about cars also get the reg checked so u know it aint been nicked x about 150 quid
If you are thinking of buying a BMW, you should check the length of your old man. I went to buy a BMW once, but was told mine was too big. Only people with little ones can drive them.
Seriously, don't buy a BMW - if anything goes wrong with it, it will cost you a fortune to repair, never mind them being bad for fuel economy and the environment.

BMW's are not uneconomical compared to cars of a simlar size and engine capacity. I owned a BMW 328 which was as good on Petrol as a 2.0 Sierra I owned before it and my 530 gets around 35mph on the motorway and about 26mpg around town. So not too bad really. A 7 series will be a lot cheaper to own and run than a similar age Jaguar and will let you down a lot less.
As for what to look for, make sure everything works. Problems with the aircon and other electrical gadgets can be pricey to fix. Check the service history is full and all BMW. Ideally having the service invoices to back it up is better since a history can be faked. As long as the car has been cared for and hasn't been in a crash you should be fine.

for a car like the 728 get it checked by a BMW mechanic as if it goes wrong or has a problem you will be in for huge repair bills and will hate the vehicle. As for prices look in auto trader or exhcange and mart as they have a good amout to look at with diffent milages and options.
Have your potential purchase professionally checked (if in UK, AA offer good independent service), spending a little of your budget on getting it properly checked (and checked out for outstanding HP, stolen etc etc), will pay you back many times over.
Also, keep back at least 10% of your budget to fix and service whatever you buy, as ALL used cars need something (normally that is why they are being sold).
