I hope this helps.
It happen to my dad too, he also has the 96 Laguna, you need to contact Renult and tell them about it.
oh no i don't know to much about them cars you would need to get professional help with that i think
Make sure where the boot catch is is clean and free of debris.
Try some WD40 on the lock mechanism itself.
After the WD40 try locking and unlocking with the remote to see if you can get the WD40 to work into the lock. You may have to lock and unlock the mechanism while spraying.
If that fails look for a car locksmith in your local directory, they should be able to help.
if you can lock it by putting the key in the lock and turning it then the locks ok, just change the central locking motor. fairly easy job.
get a mechanic to look at it.
I had the exact same problem with my P reg laguna, it is the central locking mechanism on the tailgate lock, you can disengage it and operate it manualy by the key, its an easy fix, go to a breakers yard and pick up one for about £10. if you take off the panel on the tailgate you will see a little black/white box next to the lock, this is the motor you need to replace/disconect, the key will just be turning round and round if i'm right and will work once motor is disengaged
